Winner will hope to emulate Lamiroys championship crown

11/02/2008:// The Saltrock Open is being staged, surf permitting , at Croyde Beach and 12 months ago it proved the launch pad for Perranporth's Sam Lamiroy championship crown.
Lamiroy finished top of the 2007 rankings despite only winning two events of the nine-contest series. The former Plymouth University surf club captain and British student champion proved a formidable force with an unrivalled consistency in the line-up. Newquay's Llewellyn Whittaker has built up a strong reputation for surfing the powerful beachbreak waves at Croyde scoring an epic 10-point tube ride the last time the competition was held over the Easter period.
In the Women’s division, Croyde will show the first signs of the changing of the guard with young talented girls such as Holly Donnelly, Gwen Spurlock, Beth Mason and defending event champion Karma Worthington showing their intentions to push the boundaries and show what the future of women’s surfing is in the UK.
Surfers of all ages and abilities will travel to Devon, to take part in what has traditionally become one of the most important stops on the tour.
This first tour pit-stop has grown in stature over the years thanks to epic conditions and some heroic performances from the best surfers in the country.
There will be four main categories: Men’s Open, Pro-Juniors, Women’s Open and the Groms Tour.
The Groms Tour includes 3 categories of its own; an Under-12s Open, an Under-16 Boys and Under-16 Girls. Saltrock are keen to maintain their support of young surfers and invest in the future of British surfing.
The Croyde event, from March 22-24 will be followed by the second leg of the tour - the Fat Face Night Surf at Lusty Glaze Beach, in Newquay, on June 27 and 28.
The 2008 Beachley Classic got underway this morning, completing Rounds 1 and 2 as well as the opening two heats of Round 3 at nearby Freshwater Beach in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves
