11/08/2005:// English junior champion Ruebyn Ash led the British charge in the opening round of the Rip Curl Boardmasters in Cornwall.
Ash, from Bude, won the opening men's heat at the 5star World Qualifying Series event with a radical wave attack at Fistral Beach, in Newquay.
Ash finished just over a point ahead of second place British pro junior champion and Headworx team rider 19-year-old Matt Capel, Leny Perdomo and Welshman Nathan Phillips.
Recent BPSA Sri Lanka Air Champion of Champions winner Ruebin Pearce, who is based in Cornwall, made the most of the onshore two foot plus waves to secure runner up in heat two.
Close rival and friend Micah Lester, from Constantine Bay, won the heat leaving Porthlevan's Dan "Mole " Joel and Johnny Fryer, from the Isle of Wight, with no place in the next round.
In heat three, current English number one Alan Stokes made his intentions clear with an impressive 12 point tally to take top spot ahead of Portugal's Carlos Cabrero.
Ireland's Cain Kilcullen was third ahead of the Uk's Nick Tiscoe.
Newquay's Oli Adams saw off Americans Dylan Graves and Tanner Gudauskas to win his heat by two points.
The main seeds are due to take part in the action in round three.
Meanwhile, English champion Nicola Bunt was one of five British casualties in the first round of the women's WQS Nokia Pro being stage alongide the men's event.
Bunt finished last in her heat, more than nine points adrift of winner American Holly Beck.
Robyn Davies, Kathleen Spears, Sarah Bentley and Jo Ulczak also failed to make it into the last 24.
European hopes now rest with three French surfers, including former pro winner Emmanuelle Joly.
On the other side of the world, Briton Russell Winter crashed out of the Taharo Pro in Japan after finishing third in his opening second round heat.
The 29-year-old opted to miss the Newquay Boardmasters to compete in a higher-rated World Qualifying Series pro contest in the Far East.
Winter, who is pushing hard for a place in the top flight next season, was toppled by Japan's Tomofumi Yoshioka and American Kyle Knox.
The Newquay surfer is flying high on the WQS tour after the midway point after a superb last 16 place finish at the US Open of Surfing in California.
