Jersey local wins SAS open by George Mojo

20/08/2005:// A mix of progressive and traditional surfing earned English champion Ben Skinner two trophies at the Surfers Against Sewage/Alohoa Cornish and Open.

Skinner, from Jersey, not only won the longboard final but was also part of the Team SAS squad which took the honours in the Tag Team event at Porthowan Beach. Welsh Masters champion Chris Griffiths was runner-up.

As well as Skinner, Team SAS included James Hendy, Skippy Skilton and Sarah Bentley. Team Pure Blue Water were the beaten finalists.

In the Open final, North Devon Headworx team rider Richard Sills dominated proceedings to defeat Australian Wesley Kelly, fellow South African Clinton Fraser and Newquay's Llewellyn Whittaker.

Rebecca Templeton, from Wales was crowned the women's champion, while Cornish legend Jed Stone surfed strongly to take the Masters title.

Damian Prisk retain his Cornish and Open title in the Bodyboard division.

More than 150 competitors took part in the event event which had a strong environmental theme.

Contest organiser Michelle England said: "The SAS are stoked that this year's Cornish and Open has stood out through its commitment to deliver both environmental friendliness and a high level of competitive surfing."
