Brazilian wins all-South American final by George Mojo

05/09/2005:// Brazilian Adriano de Souza has tightened his grip on the top of the World Qualifying Series pro tour after winning an all-South American final at the Rip Curl Pro Super Series in France.

Seventeen-year-old De Souza is over 3,000 points ahead of nearest rival Australian Shaun Cansdell after 23 events.

It was a great victory for the former ASP world junior champion who's trademark rapid-fire, energetic surfing was enough to defeat Ordirlei Coutinho to take maximum points.

Cansdell saw his hopes dashed in round four by Paulo Moura and Hawaiian Roy Powers. Moura's went from strength to strength befor bowing out in the semi final - a result which moves him up into fourth place in the rankings.

Briton Russell Winter had started strongly at the Hossegor event elminating WCT surfer Tim Reyes in his opening heat.

Winter, from Newquay, finished runner-up to heat winner Tahitian Alain Riou in sold 5-6ft leaving Reyes trailing in their wake.

The 29-year-old failed to capitalise on his early success, though, and had to settle for last place behind Brazilian Renato Galvao, Toby Martin and Leigh Sedley in the next round.

Winter remains the only Briton in the tour's top 100 in 35th position.

Current rankings after 23 events:
1 Adriano de Souza, Brazil, 13,128 points.
2 Shaun Cansdell, Australia, 10,085.
3 Adrian Buchan, Australia, 9,975.
4 Paulo Moura, Brazil, 8,894.
5 Bobby Martinez, USA, 8,638.
35 Russell Winter, GB, 6,683.
