News WDCS calls for real protection for whales and dolphins
On the day that the UK Government launches the draft of its long-awaited Marine Bill, WDCS is calling for the government to deal with, rather than camouflage, the ongoing and serious inadequacies that we currently have with UK marine protection.
by Fran Mallion
03/04/2008:// WDCS believes that there is an urgent need to improve measures that are meant to protect the 25 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises that depend upon UK waters.
Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the Moray Firth in Scotland and in Cardigan Bay in Wales where small populations of bottlenose dolphins are threatened by likely expansion of oil and gas development in their key habitats, recently designated by the UK government as dolphin sanctuaries.
Sarah Dolman, WDCS Moray Firth Campaign Manager, said: "The UK currently faces serious problems with its marine protection, where the energy ministry, for example, appears to pay lip service to the protection of dolphins and whales, in pursuit of massive oil and gas development. It seems likely that under current rules, even the UK's bottlenose dolphins Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) are fair game for oil and gas exploration."
The draft UK Marine Bill launched today will affect the waters of England and Wales, with a Scottish Marine Bill expected to be launched early in 2009.
WDCS Director of Science, Mark Simmonds, commented: "In order to ensure the long term and effective conservation and protection of our whales, dolphins and porpoises, we need joined-up thinking from the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments. We hope that together the Marine Bills will provide a suitable framework of legislation by providing coordination of measures across the UK, including appropriately integrated planning processes for all marine industries. However, it is clear that other measures are also required in the face of ongoing rapid developments in the marine environment."
