In a world where Aussie and US brands rule the surf industry, Mark Hagley’s Plain Lazy has quietly been simmering, but now with 15 different product lines it is rapidly coming to the boil. Plain Lazy is 15 years old this year and this is the year when they can go head to head with the big boys.
by Chase PR
03/04/2008:// Back in 1993 a surf, skate and sleep crazed student, named Mark Hagley, decided to turn his back on education and, with his student loan still firmly intact, chose to embrace the world of business.
In 1993 Plain Lazy was born. The future of Plain Lazy lay solely in arms of a happy go lucky teenager. Resourceful and determined as ever, Mark did exactly what he had to, to get the Plain Lazy brand out there.
2002 saw the birth of Mark’s son Kieran who unbeknown to him acted as the inspiration for Plain Lazy’s younger sibling, Lazy Baby, an equally cheeky collection made from Fairtrade, organic cotton. With Lazy Baby becoming an immediate success it was time to form a female counterpart. In 2004 Lazy Lady was created.
Now with big name retail partners under their belt and a large and growing number of independent stores stocking their expanding clothing ranges, Plain Lazy has diversify into further product lines. Mark has searched all over the UK to find experts in these different fields to collaborate with.
This year Mark will be launching Plain Lazy furniture (including enormous indoor/outdoor bean bags), hardware (including skateboards), toiletries and bags to name a few. Further products in the pipeline include bikes, surfboards, shoes and watches.
It is only with these collaborations that Plain Lazy is hoping to achieve the expansion that they are aiming for.
Mark has also been brokering deals over the pond with Plain Lazy being launched in Canada with the US set to follow suit.
For Mark, work is one thing, but it would be nothing if he couldn’t surf, skate, ride his bike or spend valued time with his wife and two children (soon to be three).
How has Mark, someone who has not had a proper job and turns up to high profile meetings in shorts and flip flops, created a successful brand with a distinctive identity which is on the up, where other brands and the high street are suffering?
