News Stone on verge of masters final

[Jed Stone]

Newquay's veteran forges ahead in Peru by George Mojo

07/04/2008:// Stone is competing in the "Grand Kahnuna", or over-50, category and beat Tahitian Phillippe Klima and Australian Frank Hayter to progress to the semi-finals.

Stone, who has surfed competitively for 35 years is eight times British Veteran champion, and in 1991 won the European Championships.

He regularly competes successfully against surfers half his age, just to keep his edge, and says that his one remaining dream is to win the World Championships.

"I'm so happy to have got this far, but it has always been my ambition to win a World Title" said Stone.

"I've won British and European Titles in the past, but winning this contest would really be the pinnacle of my career. Also, I'm away for 2 weeks, and haven't been apart from my wife Lesley for this long since I was in the Navy over 30 years ago. The hardest part was leaving her, and I really want to do her proud."

Stone, a Building Project Manager, practises yoga daily and is well known in surfing circles for his incredible youthfulness, and is nicknamed 'Jedi' for his seemingly age-defying abilities.

Friend Steve England is full of praise for Stone's achievement: "Honestly, he hasn't changed in 28 years. I think he has developed some kind of horticultural thing where he plants Jed seedlings and clones himself, so he's only 26 in real life."
