Newquay's Jed Stone highest-placed Briton at ISA World Masters

08/04/2008:// Stone, a multiple British champion, narrowly missed out on a place in the Veterans final at Punta Rocas and finished fifth overall.
The 53-year-old surfed brilliantly in the Grand Kahuna Over-50s division and was unlucky not to secure a podium finish.
The Building Project Manager, has represented England on numerous occasions and it it's his ambition to eventually win a world title one day.
South African Chris Knutsen took the title with 1,000 points ahead of Peruvian favourite Paco del Castillo on 860 points.
Stone scored 610 points overall just sixty away from his nearest rival Rene Gonzalez, who finished fourth.
Two other South West surfers featured at the event. Jersey's Johnny Carden finished in in 11th place overall in the Grand Masters section, while fellow Channel islander Clayton Lidster secured 15th place in the highly-competitive Masters division with 425 points..
Peurto Rican Juan Ashton was top ahead of Brazil's Ricardo Toledo and Australian Robbie Page, who made amends by winnin the Grand Masters final on a borrowed surfboard.
The team title went to defending champions South Africa led by Knutson, Heather Clark (Masters Women), and Marc Wright (Kahunas). South Africa finished on top with 10,500 points, 1,100 ahead of Australia in second, with Brazil finishing in third. The Peruvian team rounded out the top four with 8,766-points.
ISA President Fernando Aguerre was ecstatic about the success of this international event stating, “The 160 visiting surfers will be leaving the country with a Peruvian warmth tattooed in our hearts, we are new ambassadors for Peru. The provebial fountain of youth is closer than we might think: Its the waves of the world...We don’t stop surfing because we get old, we get old beacause we stop surfing...So don’t stop!”
The location of the 2009 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship has not yet been chosen but locations in South Africa and Brazil are in the running.
