Stereo MC’s headline six-band bill at the country’s only surfing and music festival on the beach, at Watergate Bay, Cornwall.
Organisers of the White Stuff Surf Relief Festival at Watergate Bay have announced a six band line up to play the ‘Sunset Sessions’ on Saturday 26th July 2008.
26/07/2008:// International stars and Brit award-winning hip-hop act the Stereo MC’s are the headliners. A new, tightly produced 12” EP ‘Hotplate’ is being released soon and their new album ‘Double Bubble’, out in July, is sounding super slick. This could be their greatest year since the success of the 1992 hit ‘Connected’. Visit their Myspace page for a taste of what these south Londoners have been working on recently.
Local lads The Rumblestrips have gone a long way since forming in Tavistock on the border of Devon and Cornwall. Describing their sound as ‘power pop’, (or “the most joyful band we’ve heard all year” according to Elle magazine and “music to blow your wig off” from The Times), they’ve supported the Young Knives and The Zutons on tour and are currently living in LA, making their debut album.
Teenage pin-up Justin Nozuka from Toronto is mature beyond his years, penning songs about feelings and real life scenarios. Like his label mates KT Tunstall, Joss Stone and Seth Lakeman, he’s sure to go all the way to the top, and is already playing at 2,000-capacity venues like The Roundhouse in London. Expect an emotionally charged performance that this one-man-and-his-guitar.
XFM’s Alex Zane thinks they’re going to be ‘huge’ and the NME compared them to The Doors (“with more tunes”). The Wonderfuls are used to pebble beaches, being from Brighton, but their sound – that’s somewhere between The Doors, The Beach Boys, the Eels, Gomez and Beck, all uplifting harmonies and tidy rhythm sections – will go down a treat on the sand of Watergate Bay.
Ash Grunwald is a winner of two Australian Blues awards for Male Vocalist Of The Year, has been nominated for numerous other awards and was called “Australia’s greatest blues singer” by the Sydney Morning Herald. More than just a blues singer, his rootsy, gravelly vocals, accompanied with guitar, stomp box and tambourine, will sound right at home on a Cornish beach.
Glass Shark are from North Cornwall and are often compared to LCD Soundsystem. Their influences include Prince and Soulwax, they create a dance-punk melee, rife with razor-sharp riffs, thundering disco beats and more hooks than Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

In its second year, the White Stuff Surf Relief Festival combines a UK Pro Surf Tour surfing competition; an Iron Man and Diamond Lady surf lifesaving tournament; family games and activities; and a live music festival.
The event will raise funds for Surf Relief UK’s ‘Surfable’ project, giving disabled and disadvantaged young people the chance to experience surfing - an event that for many is a life-changing experience. More information can be found on the event website: www.whitestuff.com/surfrelief.
