News Swell time planned at Godrevy

[Godrevy Beach]

The National Trust's alternative surf contest, The Godrevy Midsummer Swellboard Classic is returning for a fourth consecutive year by George Mojo

15/06/2008:// This event combines surfing with a fancy dress element. Many returning competitors plan their fancy dress months in advance, fully aware that the judges are scoring on entertainment-value as well as surfing skills.

All soft foam boards are supplied courtesy of Swell Surf Products and the competition is judged using an ability grading system so every competitor stands a chance of taking away the coveted title of Swellboard Champion.

Registration takes place near the lifeguard hut between 10-11am on Sunday, June 22nd.

The fancy dress parade will start at 11.30am and entrants are encouraged to wear fancy dress as extra points will be awarded.

The surf competition itself begins at 12 noon.

This year the Trust will be inviting competitors to calculate their Carbon Footprint on the day - the smallest footprint will win the Green Surfer Award.

There will also be music in between heats and a BBQ.

Nick Holden, National Trust Warden and mastermind behind the Swellboard competition says: "Now in its fourth summer the Swellboard Classic gets better each year. Dress to impress, head down to Godrevy, grab yourself a swelly and show the judges your moves."

This family-orientated competition is open to surfers of all ages and abilities and is free to enter.

Competition entry forms are available at the NT car park hut at Godrevy and online at www.nationaltrust.org.uk.

Local surf school, Shore Surf, have sponsored the event and collaborated with the Trust since the competition began.
