The reigning European champion Lee Ann Curren has crashed out of the Billabong Surf-Eco Festival in Brazil
by George Mojo
20/06/2008:// The French teenager, who led the small European squad to Praia do Forte, was the only one of four girls in contention to reach Round 2 but was defeated by current ASP Women's World Tour member South American Silvana Lima and young rising surfer Paige Hareb, from New Zealand.
Curren, 19, a former ASP European Junior Champion, lost with a disappointing 9.60 point heat tally (out of a possible 20) and gets 780 ratings' points counting for the ASP WQS international ratings.
With all fellow Europeans Fransisca Santos, from Portugal, fellow countrywoman Joana Rocha and France's Amandine Sanchez losing in Round 1, Curren secures the best European result of the event.
Curren, who dominated the 2007 ASP Women's European Tour with two victories out of three, is one of Europe's most promissing surfers towards a possible qualification for the elite ASP Top 17 this year and will be looking to gain experience and seed points for her first year as a full-time ASP World Qualifying Series campaigner.
In the Men's event, after several lay days that allowed the European contingent to practice and get in rhythm with the Brazilian sand banks, Round 2 got underway and all top seeded surfers including French favorite Patrick Beven will try and advance.
Beven, a longtime top ASP WQS European representative, has had a slow start this year and is chasing major results to get his ASP World Tour qualification campaign underway.
Beven, who won an ASP WQS 6-Star event in Brazil in 2006, is considered a specialist in the Brazilian waves and will be a serious contender for the precious 2000 winner's points.
Portugal's Justin Mujica, who is already through to Round 3, Ruben Gonzalez and Abdel El Harim are the other three European surfers still in the Billabong Surf-Eco Festival and will have to get through a massive field of Brazilian surfers led by current ASP World Tour No. 4 Adriano de Souza
