News Water contact closure extends to Imperial Beach

The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health has extended the water contact closure at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline north to include Imperial Beach. by Serge Dedina

23/02/2006:// The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health has extended the water contact closure at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline north to include Imperial Beach. A closure for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge was issued yesterday following rain which caused sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River to enter the United States and the Tijuana Estuary. Field measurements today indicate northward moving currents along the Imperial Beach shoreline that can bring contamination from the estuary mouth north. Signs warning of sewage contaminated water will remain in place until sample results indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use.

For more information on the Tijuana River, please call the U.S. International Boundary & Water Commission at 619-662-7600.

For updates on beach closure information please call the 24-hr. hotline at (619) 338-2073. OR www.cleanup.org enter your zip code and select Beach Water Quality
