Bacterial levels on Feb 28 measured 4 million total coliform and > 240,000 E. Coli MPN/100mL (in the river). A northward hike from Monument Road to the pilot channel (Thomas Bros 1349 H4) on March 1 found water in the channel, but no movement. Evidence of recent large volume flows from Goat Canyon and Smuggler's Gulch to the pilot channel and estuary were observed.

06/03/2006:// The most recent rainfall on the morning of February 28 brought 0.51" rain to San Ysidro and 0.59 - 0.87"+ to the upper Tijuana watershed. DEH issued a 72 hour General Advisory for all coastal waters due to contamination by urban runoff on Feb 28.
Flows in the Tijuana River entering the U.S. spiked briefly to over 5 cubic meters/ sec about 3 AM on Feb 28, and then again to over 6 cubic meters/ sec about 2 PM. After that time the river flow gage reading dropped to zero suggested at gage error. The SDCOOS Nearshore current flow at 1 km offshore from the river mouth has been northward (10 -20+ cm/sec) for the last two days (Feb 28 and March 1) and is slowing to neutral today. The Alongshore current had been weakly (10 cm/sec), but persistently northward since Feb 27. A small southwest swell was also present Feb 28 and March 1. DEH issued a closure for the Imperial Beach, Silver Strand, and Coronado ocean shorelines on Feb 28.
City of San Diego samples on Feb 28 showed bacterial exceedances at the river mouth (multiple indicator and magnitudes over standards) and the next three stations to the north (furthest at the north end of Imperial Beach). The spring tides caused by the new moon on Feb 27 are enhancing tidal exchange of estuary flows to the ocean.
On March 1 DEH verified the river is again flowing west through the northern arm to the estuary that is visible at Saturn Blvd. Flow rate at this location was higher than that observed on Feb 21, with a more brown color from sediment, and fewer detergent bubbles. The SDCOOS 24 hour averaged surface currents showed a NW flow direction from the estuary mouth with currents bending back into Coronado during Feb 28 and Mar 1. Contaminated water could then have been pushed onto Imperial Beach and Silver Strand beaches during the afternoon NW winds. This NW flow pattern in the surface appears to be breaking down today.
DEH sampled six locations between Cortez Ave in Imperial Beach and Central Beach in Coronado today, March 2.
Sample data and SDCOOS data will be evaluated on Friday to determine if the closures may be lifted.
