News 4000 want full sewage treatment in Guernsey

[SAS]

4220 people have now signed the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) petition for by Richard Harding

06/03/2006:// The petition was delivered to Public Services Minister William Bell by SAS campaigners earlier this week at the end of the public consultation period for the States Green Paper on Sewage. SAS are delighted so many islanders and visitors to Guernsey have shown overwhelming support for this campaign by signing the petition.

We hope the petition will re-inforce to Ministers and local Deputies that they can no longer prolong a decision on updating sewage treatment for Guernsey. Installing full sewage treatment would bring an end to the discharging of 4 millions gallons of raw sewage and wastewater a day into the Little Russel.

Whilst the majority of petition signatures came from those living in Guernsey, there were also signatures from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden and Japan. SAS believes the issue of Guernsey’s sewage treatment is beyond that of just an island issue and a future without full sewage treatment could ultimately damage the islands reputation on the world stage.

SAS hopes the States will now move forward quickly and agree to implement a full sewage treatment programme for the island at the earliest opportunity.

Richard Hardy, SAS Campaigns Director says: “The States have asked for the public’s view on sewage treatment and that has happened overwhelmingly with 4220 people calling for an end to the dumping of raw sewage at sea and for Guernsey’s ageing sewerage infrastructure to be replaced with a ‘state of the art’ sewage treatment facility. We hope this public show of support will be fully acknowledged by the States and ultimately accepted so that Guernsey can join the other popular seaside resorts across Europe that already enjoy clean and safe water all year round”.
