UK Surf Shop Gains Global Recognition for Environmental Commitment
by Jon Finch
06/03/2006:// In their ongoing mission to run a planet friendly business, North Devon based Loose-Fit Surf Shop has earned a nomination in the magazine Surfers Path’s global “Green Wave Awards” for excellence and achievement in promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness in the surfing world – the only surf shop in the world to receive the nomination.
“We realise that being environmentally friendly and being commercially successful go hand in hand, and indeed that today’s customers demand not only the best product and best service, but also a serious commitment to the natural environment” says Loose-Fit Retail & Environmental Manager Scott Burrows.
Through pioneering initiatives such as planting a tree for every surfboard sold in their shop, Loose-Fit aims to help combat Climate Change by striving to be the world’s first carbon neutral surf company. Being carbon neutral means for every gram of CO2 entering the atmosphere through running the business, activities will be carried out to absorb the same amount back.
By pledging at least 1% of their net revenues to environmental groups, Loose-Fit demonstrated their commitment to the environment at the start of 2005 being the first surf shop outside the US to become a member of the organisation “One Percent For The Planet”, a US based global alliance of businesses committed to protecting our natural environment and creating a healthier planet. Other high profile members include Jack Johnson and Patagonia.
