Water contact closures for Imperial Beach and Ocean Beach northward moving currents in Imperial Beach / sewage spill by Serge Dedina

12/04/2006:// Imperial Beach
The water contact closure at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline was extended north to include the Imperial Beach shoreline. Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary since February 21st, and continued until about 5:00 AM on April 3rd. Observations today indicate northward moving ocean currents and suspected contamination of ocean waters in Imperial Beach. Signs warning of sewage contaminated water will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use.

For more information on the Tijuana River, please call the U.S. International Boundary & Water Commission at 619-662-7600.

San Diego
An estimated 36,630 gallon spill of sewage contaminated runoff occurred yesterday on Elsa Road in the Grantville neighborhood of San Diego. The spill consisted of an estimated 2,220 gallons of sewage and 34,410 gallons of potable water. The spill began at 10:16 PM on April 3rd following a water line break that caused infiltration and overflow of a sewer line until the water line was shut off at 1:30 AM on April 4th. The spill flowed into the San Diego River. Signs warning of sewage contaminated water have been posted at the river outlet at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use. For more information on the spill, please call the City of San Diego at 858-292-6403.

For updates on beach closure information please call the 24-hr. hotline at (619) 338-2073. OR go to www.cleanup.org and enter your zip code.
