News Tom Butler aims high

Newquay's own aims to retain title by George Mojo

19/04/2006:// The British junior surf team will compete against each other for the last time this weekend before heading off to the World Surfing Games in Brazil.

The squad, who have been training throughout the winter ahead the South American event, will be aiming to do well at the British Schools Championships in North Devon.

Woolacombe is hosting the annual contest which has attracted entries from all over the UK, including Cornwall.

The surfers will compete in individual categories for boys and girls and Under 18, Under 16 and under 14 age groups.

There is also a Team challenge that has been won for the previous two years by Braunton School from Devon.

Newquay's defending Under 18 champion Tom Butler starts pre-contest favourite although fellow British team-mates Billy Norways, from St. Ives, and Braunton's Connor Spears will aim to test last year's champion.

Butler's brother Jack is in contention for the Under 16 boys title along with rippers from Braunton School Lyndon Wake, Stuart Campbell and Alex Baker.

The wildcard will be Toby Donachie, from Newquay, who has just burst on to the contest scene with a stunning victory in the recent event at Croyde Bay.

The girls category was dominated by Welsh girls in 2005 and is sure to be the same this year.

The Swansea crew of Beth Mason, Gwen Spurlock, Becky Templeton and Rhiannon Davies all made the final and will want to repeat that feat this year.

Holly Donnelly from Newquay and another Swansea girl Kate Dendle will do their best to stop them.

Contest Director Karen Walton, has predicted a sizable swell for the two day event which kicks off on Saturday morning.
