News Winter on a mission

Brit heads for South Pacific by George Mojo

16/05/2006:// British number one Russell Winter is on a mission to surf some of the most dynamic waves in the South Pacific.

Winter, from Newquay, has been invited to join a unique surfing expedition around the islands of Tahiti and Moorea.

The 30-year-old was asked to take part in the special O'Neill Mission series of events after winning the World Qualifying Series Highland Open in Scotland a few weeks ago.

The victory, which followed a huge stand-up barrel in the final at Brimms Nest, catapulted him into 37th place in the world rankings.

Winter will be joined on the trip by fellow finalist Brazilian Bernardo Miranda and semi-finalists Australian Luke Munro and Aritz Aranburu, from Spain.

The quartet will tour the South Pacific aboard the 120ft Houmana yacht. They'll be joined by four wildcards for the mobile competition which will be judged using a system of peer-based and professional reviews. Prize-money is up for grabs.

Organisers say the event is aimed at pushing the boundaries of surf events with a different format and going to places not otherwise possible to host big events.
