News Arugam event pulled

Civil unrest leads to cancellation by George Mojo

17/05/2006:// Civil unrest has led to the cancellation of the Sri Lankan leg of the British professional surf tour.

Forty-eight UK surfers had been due to compete in the BPSA Champion of Champions at Arugam Bay from June 25 to July 2.

The area is slowly being rebuilt after being in the path of the Boxing Day tsunami 18 months ago.

Organiser decided to call off the event because of high-tensions around Columbo and a Foreign Office warning.

The BPSA event was seen as a positive step in the right direction to rebuilding their economy after the Tsunami last year.

It is hoped that if things settle down, the BPSA will be able return in the near future to the perfect waves of Arugam Bay.

UK Surf Promotions are not ruling out a salvage event for the BPSA to be held elsewhere.

The aim of the tour and the development of the Champion of Champion's has always been to lift the level of British professional surfing, this is still key and a replacement incentive needs to be found.
