News Call of the Wild Roadshow

SAS outline climate change for surfers by Richard Hardy

30/05/2006:// Nature has been showing us its destructive side in recent years and it needs help from us all to put it right. For our oceans, rivers and lakes climate change is already leading to more water pollution but unless everyone curbs their carbon dioxide emissions we are set for a worsening scenario.

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are about to embark on the first leg of a ‘Call of the Wild’ roadshow that looks to get the UK’s recreational water users on board to play their part in the challenge to stop damaging climate change.

At our first 5 stops we’ll be highlighting the current situation regarding water quality issues in the country, talking on all of our campaign areas from ‘Sewage and Sickness’ to ‘Safer Shipping’ and looking at local issues affecting water quality. But climate change will be the driving force behind this tour and what we have already learnt is set to send shivers down every water-users wetsuit!

Each event will be in the form of an evening public meeting (all welcome!) where WE get to update everyone on all our campaign issues and YOU get to tell us about any local water issues in your area. We’ll be showing a new surf/windsurf (whatever’s most relevant to our audience) film at the end of each talk and the venues will have a bar too so it should be an informative and fun night for everyone. Talks start at 7:30pm.

First up is
·12th June The Slug and Lettuce, 2 Upper King St, NORWICH.
·13th June Bankside, Saltburn Bank, SALTBURN-BY-SEA.
·14th June Three Sisters pub, 139 Cowgate, Grassmarket, EDINBURGH.
·15th June The Hilbre Court, Banks Road, West Kirby, THE WIRRAL.
·16th June The Sandbar, 136a St Helens Road, SWANSEA.

Richard Hardy, SAS Campaign Director says, “Every recreational water user should be aware of current sources of pollution that affect their beaches, lakes and rivers. In addition groups like, surfers, windsurfers and sailors must play an active role to minimize their carbon dioxide emissions to protect their breaks/local spots from the impending threat of climate change. We urge anyone who uses the water for recreation to get along to this roadshow to find out more and learn ways in which they can help support our campaigns”.
