News Top longboarders converge on Watergate

Britain’s best log riders in action at The Extreme Academy by George Mojo

24/06/2006:// Britain’s best longboard surfers will be in action at The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay this weekend, for the second leg of the Oxbow British Longboard Union series.

Now in its tenth year, the Oxbow B.L.U. series has become synonymous with cutting-edge performance longboarding. The Midsummer Classic is no exception, with the event attracting an extremely competitive field to contest four divisions - Open, Ladies, Junior and Masters - for prize money and B.L.U. ranking points.

Sennen’s Sam Bleakley is currently topping the 2006 B.L.U. series rankings in the Open division following a win in the season-opening event held at Perranporth over Easter.

Hot on his heels is Oxbow team-rider Ben Skinner, from Newquay, who finished in second place at Perranporth.
Skinner, who is currently ranked in the top 15 in the world, is on top form at the moment having won both the 2006 English and British national championships in the past two months.

2005 B.L.U. Champion Elliot Dudley, currently in third place, will be looking to secure a good result in The Midsummer Classic if he is to have a good chance of retaining his title this year.

Another name to watch is 2005 B.L.U. Junior champion Adam Griffiths, who last year proved he has talent beyond his years by placing third overall in the Open division. Griffiths, from Cornwall, is currently topping the 2006 Junior rankings and last month won the Junior division of the British Championships for the second year running.

Competitor registration will take place at 8.30am on Saturday 24th June, with the first heats hitting the water by 9.30am.

Will Ashworth, Managing Director of The Hotel and Extreme Academy said: “The Midsummer Classic marks the start of the season in Cornwall - the sea is warming up, it is light until 10.00pm, and with over 60 of the country’s best longboard surfers in action at Watergate Bay it’s the perfect time of year to be on the beach.”
