News Fitness high on Ash's priorities

[Joss Ash aims to reach new heights]

Current English champion steps up training by George Mojo

13/07/2006:// Bude aerial specialist Joss Ash is stepping up his training regime to give the current English champion an edge over his competitors in the line-up.

Twenty-four-year-old Ash is working with sports performance trainer Nathan Carter using the Versaclimber, a stepping and climbing fitness machine.

Ash has been training at the Fusion Gym in Bude, to help develop his surfing-specific conditioning.
Carter put together a tailor made fitness programme for Ash and ensured the Versaclimber was at the heart of his training.

Joss has been technically at the top of his game for a few years now, but in the past has Versaclimber as it provides a total body conditioning workout for the user and due to its non-jarring movement is ideal for preventing and recovering from injury.

Joss has been honing his skills and his countless hours of practice have seen him emerge as one of the most exciting home grown talents of recent years. Nathan is now helping to ensure his level of physical conditioning matches his technical ability.

I’m working with Joss to develop his endurance and strength to a level where he can finish a competition as strongly as he started,” explained Nathan. “Without the high level of conditioning required of a professional athlete, Joss would not maximise his potential and this would limit his progress within the sport. The muscles used on the Versaclimber are functional to the paddling action so we can effectively simulate the movements on dry land. It also enables Joss to strengthen his lower body to a level which enables him to perform the cutting edge moves we see him doing so often.”

Joss started his programme with Nathan earlier this year and his enhanced level of fitness has already paid major dividends when he won the 2006 English Championships – a particularly impressive achievement as he was competing against the country’s most experienced surfers.

Nathan added: “The target now is to keep up the momentum we’ve achieved and really maximise Joss’ level of conditioning to help him gain the edge over his competitors.

The Versaclimber has been an integral part of our training so far and that’s only going to increase and improve as the level of conditioning develops.”
