News Headworxs rider wins Beach Ball

Johnny Fryer triumphs in Carve sponsored 'Skins' by Howard Swanwick

18/07/2006:// They thought Stokesy couldn’t be beaten, but Johnny Fryer, the latest signing for the Headworx team, and former British Junior Champion, triumphed this weekend in the Carve-sponsored ‘Skins’ event at Newquay’s Beach Ball festival.

The unique format of this event suited the Headworx man down to the ground, with surfers going all out to claim their best waves in each heat to progress and claim prize money at every step. The high-energy, new school style of the Fry man was too much for the competition and the 22-year-old came through five heats at Fistral Beach before taking out the final with his rapid fire moves in the small clean surf. It was the first time that Alan Stokes has been defeated in this event for three years.

It feels great to win,” commented the Headworx man, known as ‘Mr. Keen’ on the circuit for this dedicated approach and last-man-out-the-water mentality. “It was a fun event and it’s been a cracking weekend on the beach. I’m stoked to have won as it’s my first chance to get on the podium since I signed with Headworx and that was important to me.”

After injury spoilt his chances last year, Johnny sees 2006 as a big year for him, and is looking forward to upsetting a few of the established faces on the British and European scenes as the BPSA tour resumes in September and the WQS tour comes back to French and UK shores next month.

Johnny is a major part of Headworx’ core rider programme and his leading role among English surfing was a big factor in with the company’s decision to sign him at the same time as agreeing their new licensing agreement with the English Surfing Federation. Johnny, who grew up on the Isle of Wight, is the face of the company’s new England Surf clothing collection!

Johnny’s win rounded off a good week for the Headworx team, who saw last year’s BPSA Tour Champion Reubin Pearce return to the top of the leaderboard when the standings were announced last Monday. All attention now turns to the upcoming Newquay Boardmasters as all three Headworx surfers will be in action – Reubin Pearce, Johnny Fryer and young gun Matt Capel.
