News Hopes high at Boardmasters

Russell Winter top British seed for Rip Curl Boardmasters by George Mojo

31/07/2006:// Winter, who is in 31st place on the World Qualifying Series pro tour, has had a great season so far with victories in Scotland and The Maldives.

The 31-year-old is seeded into round two at Newquay's Fistral Beach against Morocco's Abdel El Harim.

Newquay's Mark Harris also goes in the second round against South Africa's Travis Logie.

More than 130 surfers are taking part in the contest including defending champion Antonio Bortoletto, Darren O'Rafferty and WQS champion Adriano de Souza.

Greg Emslie, Mickey Picon and Eric Rebiere also feature at the week-long festival.

Jayce Robinson has been given the event wildcard and is up against Tanner Gudauskas, from America, and Australian Tevita Gukilau.

Newcastle's Sam Lamiroy goes in heat one where his main rival will be American Chris Davis.

British and English champion Alan Stokes is up against BPSA rival Reubin Pearce, Paul Fisher and Hira Terinatoofa.

Newquay-based South African Llewellyn Whittaker meets Aussie pair Yarin Brown and Luke Dorrington.

Heat 15, sees Briton Nick Tiscoe go up against Brazil's Leandro Bastos and Spaniard Hodei Collazo.

Gary Wells is in the water straight afterwards and can expect a tough heat against Eric McHenry, from America, and South African David Richards.

Danny Wells, Martin Black and Oli Adams also have tough openers at the 5star event.

Alongise the men's event there a women's 3star WQS competition which has attracted 35 surfers from 10 countries.

There are two World Championship Tour surfers including Rip Curl Rider Jessie Miley-Dyer and last year's winner Silvana Lima.

Britain will be represented by Sophie Hellyer.
