Boardmasters Surf & Music Festival gets underway

01/08/2006:// The 25th annual Rip Curl Boardmasters Surf & Music Festival got underway at Newquay’s Fistral Beach Newquay, with the ASP Women’s Tampax Compak Fresh Pro" World Qualifying Series contest starting things off for the festival.
Contest favourites Australian's Jessi Miley-Dyer and Stephanie Gilmore ( started their campaigns well, easily outclassing their competition in the tricky 4ft waves. Both surfers advance through to the quarter-final round.
“The conditions are really tricky this afternoon because it’s about 4ft and there is a lot of water moving because of the tide. I was getting bashed around a lot,” said Miley-Dyer, the current WQS Rankings Leader.
“I’m stoked to get through that heat, especially because we only arrived last night from America. Yesterday was the final day of the US Open in Huntington Beach and I finished second to Sofia Mulanovich (Peru), which was awesome, but it did mean I had to surf four times which was tiring. Steph and I did get upgraded on our flight, so that made up for it!”
Miley-Dyer, aged 20, scored the highest single wave score of the day with a 6.83 out of 10.
Gilmore, current ranked third overall on the WQS Rankings cruised through her first heat with a combined score of 13.33. The 18-year-old matched her Rip Curl teammate’s efforts and equalled the highest wave score of the day, another 6.83.
UK hopes were dashed this afternoon when local favourite Robyn Davies (Cornwall) failed to find waves and finished in fourth overall in her heat. ASP World Tour veteran Heather Clark (ZAF) won the heat, with France's Amandine Sanchez (FRA) in second and Darlene Conolly., from America. in third. South Westl surfer Sophie Hellyer is still to surf and keeps UK hopes alive.
In the Men's division, Briton's Russell Winter and Mark Harris are joined in the second round by Newcastle's Sam Lamiroy, who made it through his first round heat. North Devon based Australian Josh Lewin is also into the round of 96 as is Llewellyn Whittaker, from Newquay., who finished just 0.3 points behind heat winner Yerin Brown.
Clinton Fraser is out of the competition after finishing last in his opening heat to Brazilian and former world junior champion Adriano De Souza.
Newquay's Alan Stokes is also a first round casualty on his home break losing to Hira Terinatoofa and Austalian Paul Fisher.BPSA champion Reubin Pearce was third.
Newquay's Richard Dodd also failed to make it through to round two after being outpointed into third place by Mitchell Colborn and Cheyne Cottrell.
South Devon's Eugene Tollemarche had to settle for fourth place in heat 19 behind Frenchman Simon Marchand and Aussie Damon Harvey.
