Overseas surfers put paid to British interest
by George Mojo
03/08/2006:// Top UK seed Russell Winter could only manage fourth place in his second round heat held n 3ft surf at Newquay's Fistral Beach.
It was a disappointing result for the former WCT pro at the 5star World Qualifying Series event after victory at the Highland Pro, in Scotland earlier this season.
Winter, a past winner of the event, was no match on the day for American Cheyne Cottrell and Morrocan Abdel El Harim.
Cornishman and former BPSA champion Mark Harris also failed to make it into round three missing out on a place by just a point. The heat winner was Australian Travis Logie with Frenchman Christophe Allary filling the other qualifying spot.
Newcastle's Sam Lamiroy was in action in the first heat of the day but never connected with the waves he needed and finished more than seven points adrift of South African Antonio Bortolet.
The last British hope at the UK's richest pro surf contest was backhand specialist Llewellyn Whittaker, but also never got into top gear. He finished in third place with Brazilian Pedro Henrique taking top spot eight points ahead.
North Devon-based Australian Josh Lewin also failed to make the cut.
The highest heat score of the round went to former ASP world amateur champion Adriano de Souza, from Brazil, posting 18.84 points out of a possible 20 with two high scoring waves consisting of countless radical turns in critical sections of the various Fistral banks.
Other WCT riders and favourites of the event to get through their heats included Frenchman Mikael Picon and South African David Weare - last year's Rip Curl Boardmasters runner up.
The next round of the ladies event is scheduled to take to the water today.
