Brazilian Adriano de Souza pulled off an amazing last second win ahead of Australian Drew Courtney to knockout Spain's Gony Zubizarreta and Foster’s ASP World Tour surfer Travis Logie, from South Africa, in the opening heat of the day.

Luckily for de Souza the ocean delivered a last minute set wave and de Souza took full advantage.
After several critical turns the Brazilian pulled off the wave and waited patiently for the score to be announced. His 8.50 score was announced over the PA and the win was his.
“I am so stoked because it was so close at the end! I’m so lucky that wave came,” said de Souza. “I want to surf the final so am lucky to win that heat today that way.”
Australian duo Michael Spencer and Leigh Sedley were the next surfers to advance, knocking out the highly-rated Hira Terinatoofa and Portugal's Ruben Gonzalez in the following heat.
Corey Ziems and Leandro Bastos caused a big upset in Heat 3, defeating World Tour surfer Mikael Picon, from France, and Aussie Mitchell Coleborn by substantial scores.
Although Picon had looked in form all tournment, Ziems and Bastos made the most of their opportunities and easily advanced through to Round 5.
Brazilian surfer Heitor Alves surfed an amazing heat today posting the highest heat score of the round – 17.33 points out of 20. Alves is excited about the chance of making the Boardmasters finals, but is happy taking it one heat at a time.
