Jayce Robinson performs in early rounds
by George Mojo
13/08/2006:// Cornish teenager Jayce Robinson was left anything but in the shade during the early rounds of the Oakley Pro Junior in France.
The St Ive's surfer paddled out in his opening round two heat in two to three foot waves at Lacanau and walked away with top spot by three clear points.
The England international racked up a 14.84 wave score well ahead of heat runner-up Australian Mitchell Coleborn and Ireland's Cain Kilcullen.
Robinson was unable to repeat his performance in round three finishing last behind Euskadi's Marcos Sansegundo.
South Devon's Headworx UK team rider narrowly missed on a third round berth after being outpointed by Aussie Parrish Byrne and Frenchman Lukas Guichard.
Bude's Ruebyn Ash started strongly at the event, which is running alongside the World Qualifying Series Sooruz Lacanau Pro - a six-star ASP contest.
Ash, from Widemouth Bay, was a close second in his first round opener to Aussie ripper Michael Spencer. But the following round say his demise after being well beaten by another Australian Matt Wilkinson by nearly six points.
Stuart Campbell, from North Devon also bowed out in round one to French surfer Jules Thomas, as did fellow Briton Benjamin Walter who was third behind Euskadi's Jatyr Berasaluce.
With no more British interest in the competition the top seeds include Australian Ben Dunn, Brazilian Pablo Paulino and Portugal's Miguel Ximinez.
In the main Sooruz contest, British number one Russell Winter goes in round two against Brazilian Danilo Costa. The 30-year-old will be looking to improve on his disappointing early exit at the recent Rip Curl Boardmasters in Newquay. The winner of that event South African David Weare is seeded into round three against American Ben Bourgeois.
The top-class field includes several World Championship Tour surfers including Jake Paterson and Nathan Hedge.
