BPSA St Ives offers top raffle prize

19/08/2006:// The forthcoming St Ives leg of the British Professional Surf Association Tour is set to leave one surfer on the crest of a wave.
The charity Surf Relief UK is raffling what is being billed as an "unrivalled" prize in aid of its ‘Surfable’ Project which provides disabled children with the experience of surfing.
A 6ft thruster surfboard, provided by Seabase and Tunnel Vision and shaped by BPSA pro Chris Harris, is up for grabs. It's extra special because its been signed by 102 of the world’s best surfers who competed at the Rip Curl Boardmasters in Cornwall.
Signatures include possible future world champ Adriano De Sousa, 2006 Boardmasters winner David Wear, this year's womens title holder Claudia Goncalves along with British stars Russell Winter, Reuben Pearce, Sam Lamiroy and Lee Bartlett.
The board will be glassed so the winner can take to the waves and ride with all the signatures right under their feet.
The board will be on Porthmere Beach, St Ives, for the whole of the BPSA tour event being staged on August 26th and 27th.
The winning raffle ticket will be drawn at the event closing presentation.
In addition to the pro surfing competition, a fun board paddle race open to everyone will take place on the Sunday afternoon. There is free entry (charitable donation optional), trophies and prizes for the winners in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
Dave Manley, SRUK Chairman, says, “We have ambitious plans to introduce surfing to as many disadvantaged young people as possible but need the surfing community and industry to support us in this task. The ‘Surfable’ project provides opportunities for individual and companies to share our passion for the sport with those who haven’t had the opportunities that we have.”
The Surf Relief UK was originally set up by concerned surfers in the wake of the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.
In late 2005, it became a registered charity and has further evolved. In April 2006 the charity launched ‘Surfable’, an innovative new project which provides disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to try the exhilarating sport of surfing.
The initial aim of Surfable is to train surf coaches around the country with the skills and knowledge necessary to teach disabled children and then financially support projects at a network of surfing schools to make it happen.
