News Inter club battle begins

Surf clubs across the Uk battle it out by George Mojo

24/09/2006:// Surf clubs across the UK will be battling for the honours at the biggest club event in the surfing calendar this weekend.

Local pride will be at stake as Woolacombe plays host to the annual Championship in North Devon
Visiting teams will be pitting themselves against the 'locals' who have been victorious in the lively Interclub Championships for almost all of the last 15 years.

The UK surf club scene has grown steadily over the past few years and there's sure to be intense rivalry between the teams taking to the water at Woolacombe.

The event, organised by the British Surfing Association (BSA), has grown into the biggest club event in the UK surfing calendar.

More than 10 clubs from north, south, east and west made the journey in 2005 with a total of 60 surfers in the water.

The event consists of teams of six all competing in separate heats and gaining valuable points towards their overall score.

Croyde has lifted the Interclub trophy every year since 1990 except 1997, 1998, and 1999 when Newquay pipped them for the titles and 2000 when the Channel Coast were victorious.

This year the defending champions face an especially keen challenge from Newquay, who are sending two teams to the event. It's the first time Newquay has entered since claiming victory in 1999.

Porthleven, who have been runners up several times, will also be putting up a strong challenge.

Karen Walton, National Director of the BSA said, "The club scene is really taking off in Britain now and more and more people are competing at this level which is obviously a positive move.

"The Interclubs is a brilliant, friendly yet very competitive event with a great atmosphere and everyone’s looking forward to the weekend and seeing which team will lift the trophy this year."
