Jersey's Scott Eastwood takes top spot

24/09/2006:// Jersey's Scott Eastwood dug deep to take top spot in the BSA Gold Rush Shortboard finals in Cornwall.
In demanding 8 to 10ft waves at North Fistral, the Plymouth University student called on all his big wave experience to bag the £1,000 first prize.
The event, sanctioned by the sport's governing body, had been on hold for ideal surf conditions for nearly three months.
Competitors were given 72 hours notice that the invitee-only challenge was on and the waves from former Hurrican Gordon did not disappoint.
Eastwood admits to being undergunned for the heavy surf conditions which were made doubly tricky by strong to gale-force offshore winds.
In a no-holds barred final, Eastwood carved his 6ft 6in thruster through some huge turns on the vertical and feathering wave faces to rack up enough points to win.
Runners-up spot went to fellow Channel Island surfer Ben Skinner, who's swapped his longboard for a shorter stick pulling off some critical gauges and hard cutbacks.
Newquay's Grishka Roberts, a former favourite on the European Pro Tour, was third with current BPSA high-flyer Llewellyn Whittaker back in fourth.
Eastwood told Drift he was stoked with his performance: "It was some of the best waves I've ever surfed at Fistral, the sets were awesome.
"I did feel a bit undergunned as everyone else was riding 6ft 8in boards and bigger, but once I got into the waves I was away and just scored some unreal rides.
"It could not have been better for me especially as it was just ahead of the Headworx Welsh Open where I really want to do well."
Contest Director Tony Good was impressed with the standard of surfing: "I've been involved with running contests for over twenty years and without a doubt it was the most exciting ever.
"It's refreshing to have these kind of conditions and see proper big wave surfing and without a doubt this will become one of the most exciting contests on the British surf circuit."
