News Extremehorizon makes a stand

UK surf company commits to carbon reductions by Howard Swanwick

04/10/2006:// As part of Extremehorizon's commitment to minimising our companies negative environmental impact we have taken the decision to become a Carbon Neutral organisation. The carbon neutral initiative has been established to offset the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions produced by various activities such as air travel, car travel, gas/electricity consumption etc CO2 is the major contributor of global warming which is naturally taken out of the atmosphere when plants grow and store CO2 in their tissue. To redress the balance, the earths capacity to absorb CO2 can be increased by planting new forests and making sure that these forests remain in place.

So to assess our CO2 output, Extremehorizon Ltd calculated the amount of energy used in our office and the number of business Km driven per year to estimate the amount of fuel used which then allowed us to accurately calculate the resulting CO2 emissions. This was then coupled with a best guessed figure for the amount of CO2 which is generated by the manufacturing of our surf products and we also included a calculation to compensate for each surfboard which we sell (as most current surfboards are incredibly toxic) to reach an agreed figure of 5 tonnes of CO2 which we as a company generate annually. To neutralise this amount of Carbon Dioxide it is necessary to plant 250 trees per annum which we are doing by working with the Dutch based Climate Neutral group, who have certified our initiative.
The Climate Neutral group invest in forestry projects throughout the world working with the Face Foundation who select tree planting projects on the basis of strict ecological, social and financial
criteria. Their projects not only contribute in CO2 sequestration but also support local economies and provide jobs for local communities. Moreover, the Face forests are guaranteed for 99 years (the legal term for indefinitely) and are protected and managed by local people providing jobs for many years to come.
The face foundation has planted and repaired more than 55.000 hectares (110,000 soccer pitches!) of forest in cooperation with organisations in Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Kenya and Uganda.
