News Haworth ends season on a high

Devon local seals Junior British Longboard title by Howard Swanwick

10/10/2006:// The Longboard contest season has drawn to a close with some spectacular surfing over the last two weekends in very challenging conditions. Saturday the 7th of October saw the fourth and final British Longboard Union event take place at Woolacombe. The surf was difficult to say the least, with many competitors struggling to make it out through the endless walls of white water to the overhead surf in the line up.

There were some standout performances in the open with Ben Skinner from Newquay once again proving to be on top form as he has been throughout the season, cruising through the event with effortless style to first place.

In the ladies event the 17 year old Grace Davies from Jersey impressed everyone by paddling out through the surf with fewer problems that many of the more experienced guys. She won both the Woolacombe event and the overall ladies title.

Junior surfer Ben Haworth has finished his most successful season yet. He placed second at Woolacombe above last years champion Adam Griffiths which sealed the deal on him taking the Junior British Longboard title. This follows the success the previous weekend at Saunton where Ben won the overall league title in the Hotdoggers Longboard Club securing the prize of a trip to Fuerteventura sponsored by Errant surf trips. Ben also took the British Schools Championship title this year as well as the senior title in the Cornish and Open during the summer. Ben will be travelling for some winter training this year before returning to the UK in spring to continue on his competitive winning spree.

Thanks go to Minnow Green of the BLU and Norman Wright of the Hotdoggers for their for their unswerving efforts to promote British Longboarding and assist a British surfer achieve international honours.
