News Headworxs signs Fabian Baker

[Fabian Baker [Dave Jones]]

Young Jersey talent joins the UK team by Ben Byfield

14/10/2006:// After putting in an inspired performance at the Headworx Welsh Open, hot 19-year-old Jersey surfer Fabian Baker has been signed to surf-lifestyle clothing label Headworx as the latest addition to the brand’s UK rider team.

Fabian, who finished 4th in the prestigious Headworx Pro Junior final and went on to make the quarter-finals of the Headworx Mens Open at Freshwater West, caught the eyes of the Headworx honchos with some courageous and radical surfing against a field that included nearly all of Britain’s top pros and many successful international surfers.

Fabian is the latest young talent to emerge from the thriving St Ouens surfing scene and has been rewarded with a 12-month contract by his new sponsors that will see him become part of the UK’s most successful surf team. Headworx already sponsors British Pro Tour Champion Reubin Pearce, newly-crowned BPSA Pro Junior Tour Champion Matt Capel and 4x British Junior Champion Johnny Fryer.

Fabian is a hugely exciting young talent.” commented Headworx Marketing Manager, Ben Byfield. “We are delighted to welcome him onboard and I am sure that with the extra support we can offer him as part of the Headworx team Fabian will go on to great things in his surfing career. After watching him take it to the UK’s top pros in Wales there is no doubt that Fabian has a very bright future at 19 years old!

I’m stoked to be part of the team,” enthused the youngster who has just started university in Falmouth. “Headworx is a great brand with 30 years of heritage. The most exciting thing for me is the chance to surf alongside the likes of Reubin Pearce and Matt Capel who are leading the charge on the BPSA Tour this year. I’ve always loved the Headworx gear and I’m looking forward to flying the flag for the brand in Jersey, Cornwall and beyond!”

Growing up alongside top Channel Island surfers like Scott Eastwood, Christian Boletta and Clayton Lidster, the 19-year-old has worked hard over the last two years to improve his contest surfing and compete in the line-up. But his active island lifestyle includes more than just surfing. Fabian won last year’s Jersey Iron Man contest – a measure of his enthusiasm for sport and keep-fit in general. He will now be enjoying the surfing lifestyle in Falmouth with top breaks like Porthleven, Praa Sands, Fistral and Sennen all a short distance away.

Embarking on a three-year university course, Fabian will be aiming to emulate the feat of fellow Channel Islander Matt Le Maitre who won the Headworx-sponsored British University Surfing Championships in his first year. If his recent form is anything to go by he will not be far away and we can expect to hear a lot more from this talented surfer.
