Occhilupo has signed for the JS Industries Surf Team
by George Mojo
14/10/2006:// The signing comes as the 40-year-old flew home to Australia from the Billabong Pro in Mundaka to be with his wife, Jay, for the birth of their second child. The couple already have a son, Jay.
Occhilupo left the contest site near the northern Spanish city of Bilbao shortly after getting knocked out of the competition at the round two stage.
First ripping into the world surfing stage back in 1983, as a fresh faced 15 year-old grommet, Occy has since become a household name synonymous with professional surfing.
Boasting an incredible 12 wins on the World Championship Tour, Occhilupo's career is a testament to his endurance and undisputable talent. No other surfer has survived and thrived at the elite level of surfing as long the Billabong stalwart.
1999 marked the year Occy made, arguably, the biggest comeback in sporting history claiming his first World Title at the age of 33.
Now seven years later, the ‘Raging Bull’, dubbed for his powerful, almost reckless ability to destroy a wave, is putting his name to his own signature series of JS Surfboards.
“I’m stoked to be with JS, he is shaping me some unreal boards at the moment” said Occy “I’ve learnt a lot about my boards over the years and what works well for me., Aall this will flow directly onto the Raging Bull Signature Series. “
In signing Occy, JS Industries is now building one of the world’s strongest surf teams ever - . boasting Joel Parkinson, Bruce Irons, Luke Egan and Adrian all of whom have been in action in Mundaka.
The team manager of JS Industries Jason Stevenson says it's a dream signing “As a 10 year old kid, I, like a lot of people, saw Occy as my hero. To watch him grow into a surfing icon is amazing. I am stoked to have the opportunity to work with him and to design and develop these his boards, and have him joinas part of the squad”.
