News Cornish surfers share BLU title

[Bleakley in action in the BLU season]

Skinner and Bleakley tied for top spot by George Mojo

28/10/2006:// World Surfing Games silver medallist Ben Skinner and fellow Cornishman Sam Bleakley tied for top spot in the British Longboard Union 2006 rankings

After four events the pair finished on equal points and share the overall Oxbow BLU Open champion crown for the season.

Both Skinner and Bleakley showed great commitment and flare during the summer to seal top spot.

The Oxbow BLU series tests surfer’s capabilities across four events - The Wateringhole Classic’ in Perranporth, Cornwall; the Midsummer Classic at Watergate Beach, Cornwall; the Sunset Surf Classic at Gwithian Towans, Cornwall and the ‘Billy Budd's Classic’ at Saunton Sands in North Devon.

Through this challenge, the BLU series has been a focal point in National long board surfing since 1996. This year has been no exception with the UK’s top surfers battling it out for the Oxbow BLU Champion titles.

Choppy seas and large swells greeted competitors for the last test of the year. However, it did not stop Skinner from securing first place in the final of the Billy Budds Classic.

Strong performances were seen from, seventeen year old, Grace Davies from Jersey who battled some extremely large waves to win the Ladies event and the overall women's division honours.

Ben Howey from Plymouth claimed victory in the juniors with Plymouth University lecturer Malcolm Findlay taking the Masters.

Ben Haworth won the overall junior title with Findlay picking up the Masters division crown.
