News BPSA Tour Finalised

[Cornwall's Toby Atkins]

Cornwall and Devon hosts to upcoming tour by George Mojo

28/02/2007:// It's been announced that Cornwall and Devon will host will host the majority of contests in the forthcoming BPSA UK surfing tour.

Freshwater West in Wales and the reef at Thurso in Scotland will also host legs of the seven division pro series.

The finale of the 2007 Open tour will take place at Newquay's Fistral Beach in November.

The series tour starts at Croyde with the Saltrock Open on the 7th April, followed by the Fat Face Grom Challenge at Lusty Glaze on the 24th June. In August Hot Tuna will host the Groms at Porthmeor in St.Ives on the 24th. On the 22nd September Freshwater West in Wales will see the return of the Riders Choice Grom division followed by the Oakley X-PRESS Yourself Presented by Globe to be held in Newquay on the 6th October. The final event on the 10th November as always will be held at Fistral to precede the end of year awards banquet.

Hot Tuna European team rider Toby Atkins will be back to defend his title won in November at the Gul Newquay Open. His only victory in 2006 was at the Saltrock Open.

This year as an added incentive there will be £100 cash at each event; this marks a first in British surfing where the kids can feel like they are part of a professional tour. Each event will be one day only to help parents save money on travel expenses.

Divisions this year include Under 16 boys and Girls and Under 12 Open, the current tour champions are Stuart Campbell (Woolacombe), Gwen Spurlock (Wales) and Harry Timson (Newquay) respectively.

There will be independent TV production which currently distributes through TV Overload and the '360' programme on Sky Sports UK and international. Further distribution will reach overseas through Fox Fuel Australia, Outdoorlife Network Canada, Globosat Brazil, Stream Italy and Fox Fuel USA.

The purpose of the Grommet tour is to give young surfers the opportunity to compete in professionally run events where they can learn skills to take them forward for a possible future in professional surfing. By competing in a unified format they can hope for increased exposure, the possibility of sponsorship and the chance to win some money.

There will two longboard contests this season. The Fat Face Longboard in June and the Headworx Longboard, at Freshwater West, in September. Sennen's Sam Bleakley and Nick Dowrick are the respective defending event champions.
