Stop the City of Imperial Beach and the Army Corps from Destroying the by Ben McCue

01/03/2007:// An Army Corps plan to spend over $14 million to dredge tons of offshore sand for use replenishing beaches could come with a cost - the loss of prized wave breaks in Imperial Beach.

WiLDCOAST and the recently formed Imperial Beach Waterman's Council say the dredging could drastically alter waves, including at a legendary surf spot known as the Tijuana Sloughs. They worry it could stir up contaminated sand and harm water quality.

"There was no effort made to engage the surfing world in this project," said longtime Sloughs surfer and WiLDCOAST Executive Director Serge Dedina.

"This is the worst type of Army Corps pork barrel sand project that makes no sense and is a waste of our taxpayer dollars."

The project will move an initial 1.6 million cubic yards of sand from the coastal floor to the Imperial Beach shore. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which will do the work, will replenish the sand every 10 years for 50 years.
The sand would be taken from an area near a sewage outfall pipe near the U.S.-Mexico border. The last sand replenishment project in Imperial Beach involved depositing dredge material from the bottom of San Diego Bay that resulted in so much debris washing up on the beach, IB surfers renamed the sand replenishment spot, "Toxics."
