Brothers aim to retain their titles at English Surfing Championships
by George Mojo
05/04/2007:// Cornish brothers Joss and Reubyn Ash are aiming to retain their titles at next month's Headworx English Surfing Championships.
The Ashes, from Widemouth Bay, in Bude, dominated the Open and Junior divisions last year and will be looking for a repeat performance at Watergate Bay, near Newquay.
Reubyn went from strength after his junior victory lifting the European title as part of the England surf team.
Joss, meanwhile, put in some very solid performances in local competition picking up a lucrative sponship deal with Braun in the process.
He will face stiff opposition from Perranporth-based British Champion Sam Lamiroy, BPSA Junior Tour Champion Matt Capel and Newquay favourite Alan Stokes in the Open division. Headworx team rider and former English Junior Champion Johnny Fryer is also in great shape ahead of the event: “I’ve had some good winter training this year, and feel confident about my surfing right now. I had great success last year which has given me a huge confidence boost.
"The English Nationals has always been a major event and I’m looking forward to fighting it out for the title. The competition is always fierce, as winning the title means so much. With Headworx supporting both me and the event this year, it’s going to be a great opportunity to prove myself," added Fryer.
The longboarders will perhaps face the toughest challenge in trying to depose current World Number two Ben Skinner from his English crown, whilst the ladies open promises to be a great battle as the standard continues to improve year-on-year.
In all, the event will feature more than 300 competitors battling it out over 24 divisions.
Headworx team manager Ben Byfield says “We've been a proud supporter of British surfing for many years. Sponsorship of the English Nationals is a great opportunity for us to develop this event in conjunction with the English Surfing Federation.
"The championships showcase the very best talent England has to offer, and with several high profile Englishmen now competing so well overseas, it promises to be the best English Nationals event yet. We’re stoked to be involved,” he added.
Picturesque Watergate Bay will once again stage the championships and over recent years has proved to be a great host.
This beautiful sandy beach offers some of the best waves in the UK and with numerous surf breaks along its three mile length, it has proven to be the perfect venue.
The Championships are run by the English Surfing Federation - a non profit making organisation dedicated to the support and development of English surfers.
Byfield says this event is a natural extension of his team's support for the ESF: “Headworx has been working in partnership with the ESF for the past 18 months as sponsors of the England National Surf Team which has been a great success.
"I will determine who will make the Headworx England Surf Team to compete at this year’s European Surfing Championships. We will also be working closely with Paul Jeffery the contest director to ensure this event is bigger and better than ever before – both for spectators and competitors!”
This year’s contest will be staged from Saturday May 5 to Monday May 7.
