Hunter/Billabong British Schools Championships 2007
by George Mojo
13/04/2007:// Rather than getting their uniforms ready for a return to their desks next week, school children across the UK will be packing their board bags this week in preparation for the Hunter/Billabong British Schools Championships 2007 in association with Calypso.
They’ll all be making their way to Woolacombe in North Devon for two days of team and individual contests and organisers expect to see some hot talent as well as ensuring fun for all.
Defending champions Braunton School are going for their fourth victory on the trot.
Conditions look promising with 3-4ft clean waves expected over another weekend of stunning weather.
Over 120 children aged between 12 - 18 have already entered from 35 schools across the South West, England, Wales and The Channel Islands and they’ll all be looking to topple last year’s winners, locals Braunton, from their spot.
Categories include the Under 18s, Under 16s, Under 14s and bodyboarding and longboarding heats and many of the teams include the Britain’s top Junior and Grom talent. School teams are made up of fours and must contain at least one bodyboard rider or one girl and one surfer
In the Under 18s Billy Norways from St Ives will be defending his title and in the Under 16s Stuart Campbell from Braunton will be doing likewise. Local girl Kathleen Spears dominated the girls heats last year and will be looking to impress the watching spectators again.
The competition will be especially fierce as the British team members for the World Surfing Games in Portugal will be selected after the event.
National Director of the BSA Karen Walton said, “Hunter/Billabong British Schools Championships in association with Calypso is shaping up to be a great event this year with an even bigger entry than ever before.
It’s a brilliant way for them all to end their Easter holidays and we’re looking forward to seeing them all in the water," she added.
Meanwhile, With less than five weeks to go until the prestigious World Surfing Games, the British Surfing Association (BSA) is making an urgent call to key companies who benefit from the sport to help sponsor and support the British Junior Surf Team.
The BSA will be sending a full team of 12 surfers selected from Britain’s best young surfing talent, plus four coaching staff, yet despite continual approaches to key companies, no-one has stepped forward to support this vital component of the British surfing scene.
Britain is one of 40 nations to be competing in the World Junior Surfing Games in Costa Da Caparica, Portugal, taking place at the beginning of May. This will be the third time Britain has sent a full team to the Junior World Championship and with last year’s British medal haul including a silver at the World Surfing Games, a British European Junior Champion and a two world champion kneeboarders, Britain is on a definite roll on the global surfing stage.
The total 2007 sponsorship package for the Junior British Team is available for around £12,000, with the sponsor benefiting from the international exposure centred around the World Junior Surfing Games in Portugal as well a national exposure during the season. Association sponsorship packages are also available and a collective set of sponsors can also be created.
Failing a number of sponsors coming forward with financial help, the BSA will appeal to all local and national companies to step forward with support in kind and an auction/raffle will be held to raise some of the necessary funds.
For more information about sponsoring the British Junior Team, please contact Karen Walton, National Director of the BSA by calling 01637 876474 or emailing Karen@britsurf.co.uk.
