News Soundguard making waves with Surfers Ear

[Custom made earlplugs]

First ever UK clinic to spotlight condition by Howard Swanwick

02/05/2007:// Surfers Ear is a common, yet avoidable, condition caused by frequent exposure to cold water and wind. The cold stimulates the growth of bone within the outer ear canal and causes painful infections, narrowing of the ear and premature deafness, and the more frequently you surf the more likely you are to develop it.

Soundguard Surfplugs are the ultimate Surfplug and help to prevent the occurrence of Surfers Ear and infections. They are manufactured locally in Bideford, Devon by qualified NHS Audiologist (and Surfer), Rob Shaddick.

The procedure involves making an impression of your actual ear using floatable medical-grade silicone. This process ensures that the finished plugs mimic the exact shape of your ear and will lock deep into the ear canal to provide a perfect fit and comfort that sustains a watertight seal even in the heaviest of surf. The plugs are finished with a glossy lacquer, that helps to keep them clean, and they can be supplied in a variety of colours or added graphics to make them really stand out.

Soundguard Surfplugs are CE certified so can also be used as a hearing protector and cost £64.99 a pair. Life expectancy of the plugs is up to five years.

To help raise awareness to the problems of Surfers ear, Rob Shaddick from Soundguard is holding a Surfers Ear Awareness Clinic at the ‘Surfed Out’ shop in Braunton, Devon on May 26th, 27th and 28th.

This is thought to be the first ever UK Surfers Ear awareness clinic and will be held by Rob Shaddick, from Soundguard. Rob is a qualified Audiologist (and surfer) who also suffers with Surfers Ear.

The clinic provides an opportunity for North Devon provides local surfers with the opportunity to drop in and meet Rob and ask about Surfers Ear, pick up free literature, get a free ear check for Surfers Ear or to get some Soundguard Surfplugs made. The price of the plugs will include a FREE £5 gift voucher for Surfed Out*.
