News English Junior Longboard Champ crowned


Ben Haworth consolidates great season start by Andy Haworth

 12/05/2007:// The Bank Holiday weekend provided difficult conditions for this years English Surfing Championships. Some categories of the competition, run by the English Surfing Federation, had to be moved to Tolcarne from Watergate due to the westerly gales and misty weather. At least this beach provided a little shelter and so many of the remaining heats and most of the finals were run off on reasonably sized and manageable surf conditions on the bank holiday Monday.

A large crowd gathered to watch the finals despite the wind and in the Junior Longboard category it was 17 year old Ben Haworth who consolidated the great start to his season by taking the English Junior title. Ben couldn’t fail to impress the judges with his mix of style and progressive moves and romped home to an excellent win streets ahead of the remaining finalists.

Ben, from Barnstaple and a long time member of the Saunton based Hotdoggers Longboard Surf Club, also went on to further honours by making the final of the Open division against very experienced senior competitors. After the first ten minutes it looked like Ben had a chance of taking the senior title as well but strong finishes from seasoned surfers like Sam Bleakley (who went on to win) and James Parry who came second pushed Ben into third slot ahead of Chris Thompson in fourth.

Ben now looks forward to the British Championships in a few weeks time in the hope of taking that title as well.
