Skinner out to defend title this month
by George Mojo
16/05/2007:// World Games silver medallist Ben Skinner will be going all out to defend his British longboard title in West Cornwall later this month.
Skinner, who missed on on a last 16 place at the world championships in France earlier this month, is in great form going into the Godrevy Beach event.
The Cornishman is a prolific British and English champion and is a regular in the England squad.
Last year's runner-up Elliot Dudley, Sennen's England international Sam Bleakley and the current junior champion Adam Griffiths are among the 100 entries set to show their stylish moves at the St Ives break.
Located at the northern tip of St Ives Bay and an ideal longboarding wave, Godrevy will offer a welcome contrast to the hustle of Newquay during Run to the Sun weekend.
But that’s not to say that Godrevy will be quiet. On the contrary, the spacious lawns of Sandsifter will be offering live music from Glass Shark, DJ’s, a custom car display, BBQs and much more besides. And then there’s the surfing…
The titles up for grabs at the British Surfing Association contest are Open, Junior, Women’s, Senior, Masters and Veterans.
Surfshop owner David Holloway says: 'We decided to sponsor the British Longboard Championship because we have always been about supporting British boardriders and we’re doing our bit for British surfing.
"Its only since we've started operating at Godrevy with brand support that we can offer a contest venue with the facilities, entertainment package and location needed to ensure the success of this prestigious event. We are looking forward to a long future of hosting events here," he added.
The BSA wishes to thank the National Trust and the Penwith District Council, who are providing part of the competition venue and lifeguard cover respectively.
Free overnight motor-home camping will be available for the event at Sandsifter Parking site.
The defending champions going into the Championships on May 26th and 27th are: Open, Ben Skinner; Women, Dom Munroe; Juniors, Adam Griffiths; Seniors, Lee Ryan; Masters, Chris Griffiths; and Veterans, Malcolm Findlay.
