News Groms crowned in Wales

[King of Groms are crowned]

Hughes clinches first leg of Groms tour by George Mojo

31/05/2007:// Josh Hughes crowned a top-class performance in South Wales by clinching the first leg of the Quiksilver King Of The Groms UK tour.

Hughes, from Newquay, was in a class of his own to take the Under-16 title at Rest Bay, in Porthcawl.

The powerful goofy-footer was full of determination as he set about destroying a series of lefts with some trade mark gouges and slides in the final.

The wedgy peaks offered plenty of sections for Hughes to let loose, all within a stones throw from the enraptured crowd.

In the Under 16 Girls final, Welsh sensation Gwen Spurlock showed why she is one of Britain's brightest prospects with a faultless performance.

Spurlock, who's recently returned from the World Grommet championships was in devastating form.

The natural footer hooked into a long left within the opening few minutes, releasing a series of backside smacks to the beach scoring an 8.5 which was quickly backed up by a stylishly ridden right, blowing the rest of the competition out of the water.

Max Tucker's home advantage showed in the Under-14 boys final as he used his local knowledge to good affect to take the division title.

The final was closely fought until the dying moments, as Tucker patiently waited for the longer yet less consistent lefts, scampered into a sucky one and duly went about smacking a series of front side floaters and reo's to the delight of friends and family on the beach.

The winners were crowned King of The Groms by Quiksilver's Spencer Hargraves, from Newquay, who himself was a grommet champion on the very same beach.

Final results:

U14 Final: 1 Max Tucker; 2 Josh Mammett, 3 Conor Griffiths, 4 Will Pountney.

U16 Final: 1 Josh Hughes, 2 Gwen Spurlock, 3 Adam Reimitz, 4 Max Tucker.

Girls Final: 1 Gwen Spurlock; 2 Tassy Swallow, 3 Patsy Pountney; 4 Annie Beilous; 5 Connie Pountney.

The next leg of the three event series takes place at Strandhill, in County Sligo, on June 23-24. The final event is being staged at Fistral Beach, in Newquay, later this summer.
