Pre-contest favourite takes Irish leg
by George Mojo
28/06/2007:// Pre-contest favourite Aaron Reid used all his local knowledge to take the Irish leg of the Quiksilver King of Groms tour.
Battling for a place in the UK final in Cornwall, the young Sligo surfer waited patiently in the U16 boys final at Strandhill to pick up the two waves needed for victory.
Reid selected a spot where he knew he would pick up the better quality beachbreak waves while runner-up Damien Conway, Eoghan Stanley and Brian Patton paddled from peak to peak in the hunt for the best waves.
The event was part of a worldwide series to encourage young surfers that culminates annually in a world final in France bringing together the hottest young surfers from all over the globe.
Reid and Lahinch surfer Conway were the standouts during round one, while Ballyshannon surfers Patton and Stanley battled through to the final stages from the repercharge after they were both eliminated by Enniscone surfers, Barry Tuffy and Dominic Barrett.
The U16 Girls attracted a good entry and eventually ended in a final between last year's winner Amy May Garvey, from Castlederg, Copper Pigot, of Enniskerry, Sligo's Joyce Dunne, Tahlia Britton, from Rossnowlagh.
May was the in-form surfer to take the title for the second year with Britton close behind in second place. Newcomer Dunne finished in third with Pigot in fourth.
Nine year old Ayesha Garvey, May's younger sister, reached the semi-final and received a special award for her performance.
In the U14s it was another title for the Garvey family with James Garvey the clear winner.
He was followed by Bundoran surfers, Iarom Madden and Conor Maguire with Eoin O'Malley Daly, from Rossnowlagh in fourth. The trio have been making finals all year and are certainly looking promising for the future.
