News French dominate drop-knee open

[Frenchman Thomas Guilloux]

Guilloux wins Open held in Jernsey by George Mojo

03/07/2007:// French bodyboarder Thomas Guilloux of the Normandie Bodyboard Club has won the 2007 Drop-Knee Open held in Jernsey.

The event, organised by the Jersey Bodyboarders, took place in steep 2-3ft waves at La Pulentef, with the waves breaking hard on the shallow high tide sand bank.

This made conditions tricky for the early heats as competitors faced vertical take-offs leading to some difficult late drops with a few amusing wipe-outs.

Junior bodyboarder David Speller put in a strong performance to win the first of the semi finals finding some good rides on both his fore-hand and back-hand.

Local favourite Colin Laurent who has recently returned from representing the Channel Islands at the European Championships in France couldn’t find a rhythm, but did just enough to progress through to the final beating the fast improving junior Dan Garton and Seb Bonnier into third and fourth places respectively.

The second semi-final featuring four very experienced bodyboarders was dominated by the visting Normandie Bodyboard Club members Thomas Guilloux and Olivier Brosson.

Colin Crowther who took a few wipe-outs along the way finished in third spot ahead of Steve Pinzari who attempted and almost completed a very impressive 360 manoeuvre inside the barrel of the wave, before the wave bottomed out and slammed him over the inside sand-bank.

The final belonged to the two visiting French bodyboarders who fought it out wave for wave throughout the 20 minute heat.

In the end it was Guilloux who came out on top with an impressive carving display of drop-knee riding, including some neat fore-hand and backside slashes.

Brosson took the runner-up spot, drawing some nice lines with smooth style. Third spot went to Speller whose highest scoring ride included a fast reverse 360 on a walled up left-hander.

Laurent missed out on the better waves during the final finishing in fourth place; however he did provide one of the moments of the event by free-falling with the lip after swooping around late to take off on the biggest and heaviest wave to come in throughout the whole of the event.

Final results
1. Thomas Guilloux (Normandie Bodyboard Club)
2. Oliver Brossun (Normandie Bodyboard Club)
3. David Speller
4. Colin Laurent
