09/07/2007:// Briton Russell Winter put on one of his best performances of the season so to finish equal ninth at the Mr Price Pro in South Africa.
The 31-year-old won his opening heat at the 6star WQS event in Durban against Gavin Roberts, Hodel Collazo and Jordy Smith.
Winter, from Newquay, followed that up in round three with a second place behind Gilmar Silva, of Brazil. Hawaiian's Mason Ho and Joel Centeio were eliminated from the competition.
In a three-man heat in round four, Winter was outpointed by another South American and former world junior champion Adriano De Souza. The England international made it through to the man-on-man fifth round, though, with another second place at the expense of South African Gavin Roberts.
Winter was rewarded with a re-match against Silva, but was unable to gain revenge as the Brazilian who secured a place in the last eight.
It was a great result for Winter ahead of the Rip Curl Boardmasters, in Newquay, next month.
Silva bowed out in the next round to Frenchman Jeremy Flores, who went onto make the final where he lost to Brazil's Jihad Khodr.
Portugal's Tiago Pires, who made it through to the semi's, heads the WQS rankings table after 19 events of the 2007 season, with 10,850 points.
South African Jordy Smith is 800 points behind in second with Khodr's victory moving him into third place overall.
Winter is the highest-placed Briton on the pro tour moving up into 44th place in the table.
