Two of Britain's top women offer advice
by George Mojo
22/07/2007:// Two of Britain's top women pro's are hosting a series of girl's surf coaching sessions around the UK to teach the finer points of succeeding in competition.
Cornwall-based Candice O'Donnell and Holly Donnelly will also give tips to beginners at the Roxy Shimmer Surf Days being held at Fistral Beach, in Newquay; Bournemouth; Porthcawl in Wales; and Portrush in Northern Ireland.
The two-day events have been especially designed for women either looking to access the waves for the first time or learn new surfing techniques.
The Newquay duo will be joined by top female French surfer Sophie Helier.
The Roxy UK team already have their home base in Newquay at the Surfing Life Boarding House and they are involved in the development of local female surfers through their sponsorship of local girls Sarah Bentley, Candice and Holly and the talent team is always on the look out for hot Cornwall based female talent for their team.
The team also works with their head instructor and two times European Champion, Grishka Roberts to help continually encourage new female surfers into the water and develop their skills.
The surf sessions all follow the same format beginning at 10am with a surfing lesson in the morning before a healthy lunch is provided. In the afternoon girls will have a special surf yoga lesson, toning all the core muscles necessary for surfing.
After yoga, the surf chicks will feel energized and ready to kick back in front of the inspirational film ‘Shimmer’ before heading home.
Boards and female specific wetsuits will also be supplied and all ages and abilities are catered for.
Michelle Noschese, Team Manager for Roxy UK says, “We’re really looking forward to Newquay because with its great vibe, it always feels like home for us and Fistral Beach is one of the best places for surfing.
"Our Shimmer day has been designed specifically for girls because females work differently in the water and our lessons will particularly focus on the best technique for girls. We’ll focus on a number of specific exercises to help them get up and get them out in the waves and having a wicked time as they learn and progress,” she added.
