News Switch-Foot comes to the UK

Australian Andrew Crockett visits our shores by Howard Swanwick

Driftwood Gallery is proud to present an exciting exhibition featuring some of the world’s top surf artists. Coming your way this August.

This exhibition is inspired by the hugely successful surf art book Switch-foot. Switch-foot is much more than a book, just as surfing is much more than a sport. An Australian publication that struck a chord with surfing enthusiasts across the globe, Switch-foot is now coming to the UK for the first time. A cast of the contributors, including Sketch Holiday, Albe Falzon, George Greenough and Thomas Campbell have provided their original art, unseen footage and signed images for a one-off exhibition at the Driftwood Gallery, Newquay, for August 17th, 18th and 19th.

For those with a genuine interest in surfing, names such as Greenough and Falzon will already mean a lot. Albe Falzon’s beautiful photographs from the golden era of surfing, made famous by the cult film ‘Morning of the Earth’ will be on show, along with images from Dolphin Glide, the latest film from world-renowned cinematographer George Greenough. San Diego artist Harry Daily (alias Sketch Holiday, Harry the Hat), cover illistrator of Switch-foot, will be touring Europe, bringing his highly collectable art to England for the first time.

During the exhibition there will be a selection of original artwork from the legendary Sketch Holiday and visitors will have the opportunity to see him in action as he paints in his unique style directly onto a specially shaped surfboard. This fantastic and unique exhibition will be held for only three days on August 17th, 18th and 19th at Driftwood Gallery. All are welcome to join us on the opening night of Friday 17th, and are encouraged to come and make the most of this exciting experience.

Producer Andrew Crockett summed Switch-foot up: "There is something really beautiful about surfing pre-professionalism. Surfers were innocent and the style was pure and harmonious, without a thought towards competition, careers, media coverage and the whole machine that is alive and well today. I think Switch-foot gives a glimpse into that lifestyle and early style of surfing, but it definitely isn’t all about the history."

Justin Easton, owner of Driftwood gallery said "As a gallery specializing in surf art, we are really honoured and excited to be showcasing this exhibition and welcoming such big names to the uk for the first time."
