Tourist films shark while watching dolphins
by Howard Swanwick
28/07/2007:// A holiday maker visiting the English Riviera near St Ives has filmed what experts are saying is very possibly the first confirmed sighting of a Great White in English waters.
Richard Peirce, of the Shark Trust, confirmed that the fish was indeed approximately twelve feet long, with a white under belly. Caution is being excercised in this claim, as many previous sightings have in fact been put down to the White's close cousin, the Porbeagle Shark. He said: “It clearly has a white belly like a Great White. And something about the way it breaches — twisting as it leaps out of the water — also suggests it is. I’m very excited at the prospect.”
The shark appears to be playing with, or preying upon, a pod of dolphins in the ocean. Lifeguards have been ordered to clear beaches if they have a confirmed sighting of such an animal.
Although Whites have been suspected of visiting British waters for soem time, no one has ever managed to confirm a sighting. Global warming and changing sea currents could possibly explain a change in their migratory patterns.
